If you love nachos but want something a little heartier, these totchos, also known as tater tot nachos, are about to become your new favorite sheet pan dinner.
Crispy tater tots are layered with seasoned beef, melty cheese, and all your favorite nacho toppings. They’re crunchy on the bottom, cheesy in the middle, and loaded on top — just like good nachos should be.

Whether you're feeding hungry teens after a game, hosting friends for football, or just need something fun for a Friday night supper, these totchos get the job done.
And yes… they disappear fast.
What Are Totchos?
Totchos are simply nachos made with tater tots instead of tortilla chips.
Instead of chips, you bake frozen tater tots until golden and crispy. Then you pile on taco meat, shredded cheese, and toppings like:
- Sour cream
- Salsa
- Jalapeños
- Green onions
- Diced tomatoes
It’s everything you love about nachos — just with a Midwest twist.

Tachos Ingredients
Here’s the basic lineup (nothing fancy here):
- Frozen tater tots
- Ground beef - you can use ground turkey or ground sausage if you prefer. These nachos are even faster if you already have crockpot taco meat prepped.
- Taco seasoning - storebought or you can make your own taco seasoning
- Shredded cheddar or Mexican blend cheese
- Sour cream
- Salsa - you can easily make salsa in the blender, use fresh pico de gallo or buy it from the store.
- Green onions
- Optional: jalapeños, olives, tomatoes, avocado
That’s it. You’re probably already halfway there.

How to Make Totchos (Tater Tot Nachos)
- Step 1: Bake the Tater Tots. Spread frozen tater tots on a large sheet pan and bake until golden and crispy. Don’t underbake because crispiness matters here.
- Step 2: Cook the Taco Meat. Brown ground beef in a skillet. Drain if needed. Stir in taco seasoning and a splash of water. Simmer until thickened.

- Bake for 10 minutes or until the cheese melts.
- Top with diced tomatoes, sliced black olives, sour cream, salsa, and sliced jalapeños before serving.
Top with shredded cheese.
- Step 4: Cook in oven for x minutes at 400 degrees
- Step 5: Remove and add to serving plate
- Step 6: Assemble and serve!
Tips for Crispy Totchos
If there’s one thing that separates good totchos from soggy ones, it’s this:
Bake the tots fully before adding toppings.
A few other tips:
- Use a large sheet pan so they aren’t crowded.
- Don’t overload with wet toppings before serving.
- Add fresh toppings after baking.
Crispy base = better leftovers (if you have any).
Variations to Try
Totchos are flexible. Make them your own!
- Swap taco meat for pulled pork and drizzle with barbecue sauce, much like my leftover bbq pulled pork nachos.
- Use shredded buffalo chicken and top with ranch dressing or blue cheese.
- Add scrambled eggs, sausage, and a drizzle of queso to make breakfast totchos.
This is one of those “clean out the fridge” recipes that still feels fun - and tasty!
Make Ahead & Storage
Totchos are best served fresh.
If you have leftovers:
- Avoid microwaving if possible — they’ll soften.
- Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
- Reheat in the oven or air fryer to bring back crispiness.
FAQs
Totchos are tater tot nachos! Crispy tater tots topped with seasoned meat, cheese, and nacho toppings.
You can cook the taco meat ahead of time. Assemble and bake just before serving for best texture.
If you're using fresh cheese, I find that shredded cheddar or a Mexican blend melts well and adds classic nacho flavor.
