Ingredients:
- Sliced onions and Worcestershire sauce - instead of french onion soup mix, we’re using sliced onion and Worcestershire sauce. This combination is heaven for your taste buds!
- Mushrooms - instead of cream of mushroom soup, we’re using fresh mushrooms here. Buy the pre sliced version if you like and save time and effort! If you haven’t made it to the grocery store, you can sub in canned mushrooms.
- diced tomatoes - these provide the liquid for our gravy mix. You can use regular or petite diced tomatoes or even fire-roasted tomatoes. It doesn't really taste tomatoey, though, when it combines with the other ingredients in the recipe.
- cube steak - of course! Cube steaks (or cubed steaks) may also be referred to as Swiss steak. It's a round steak that has been run through a meat tenderizer. You may see tiny little slits in this cut of meat and that’s what it’s from! It also happens to be an economical and tasty cut of beef.
If you’re feeling ambitious and educational, you can read about cuts of beef.
As it cooks, the cube steak releases juices and makes its own flavorful gravy. You can also use round steak, top sirloin or top round steak in this recipe. - Salt and pepper
- Cornstarch - you can also use all purpose flour. We use this along with cold water to make the cornstarch slurry, which thickens the sauce into a tomato gravy
How to Make this Instant Pot Cubed Steak recipe
One of the reasons this recipe is fabulous is that everything cooks in one pot.
By the way, Instant Pot is a kind of pressure cooker. Somehow, we just all started calling electric pressure cookers by the brand name. But if you have an electric pressure cooker, you can make this recipe.
I used my 6-quart pressure cooker to make this recipe.

- Saute onion. Set the pressure cooker to the saute setting and add the sliced onion, cooking until it's softened.
- Add almost all the rest of the ingredients. Add sliced mushrooms, diced tomatoes with juice, Worcestershire sauce, water and cube steak to your pot, nestling the cube steaks into the other ingredients.
- Start cooking under pressure. Add the lid to your Instant Pot and set the pressure cook time to 20 minutes. Note: it will take some time for the pressure cooker to come up to pressure before 20 minutes begins to count down.
Note: if you get a Burn message, give it a few minutes. The steak and mushrooms will be giving up additional liquid and will make that message disappear. - Finish cooking. When cooking time is completed, do a quick quick release on your vent. Set the Instant Pot to the Saute setting and remove the cube steaks.
- Make the gravy. In a small bowl, combine cornstarch and 2 Tablespoons cold water. Add the mixture to the pot and whisk to combine. Cook, stirring constantly until the mixture begins to thicken into gravy, about 3-4 minutes. Add the cube steaks back into the pot and serve.
What to serve with Instant Pot Cube Steak
I like to serve cube steak over white rice or slow cooker brown rice, but you can also serve it with Instant Pot mashed potatoes or buttered egg noodles.
Italian green beans are an awesome side dish as well!

April 29th 2023.
just made this just ate some.
I used tamari soy sauce because I didn't have Worcestershire.
it was fantastic! didn't have mushroom so I just did onions, celery and some leftover red bell pepper. added a little garlic powder and onion powder.
Jennifer says
I omitted tomatoes and mushrooms(hubby doesn't care for) and added 1/2 cup salsa instead. It's not tomato-y tasting just good flavor. Also added parsley and garlic and 1 cup water instead of 1/2. Delicious recipe. Thank you!
Pamela Ryba says
Whole family loved this! I added a ton of fresh garlic, an extra onion and a second can of tomatoes, because I had nearly four pounds of cube steaks. The meat came out soft and flavorful. Great way to use a lower fat, inexpensive cut of meat. I served with mashed potatoes. Next time I’ll also add a red bell pepper.

Yum! Red bell pepper (or any extra veggies) sound like a delicious addition. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a review!
