Oh yeah. I went there.
Friends, you don’t need to wait for a birthday party or special occasion to make these cupcakes. We are using a cake mix shortcut that makes these easy peasy to bake up but I promise, no one will know there’s a box involved.
And really, all the box mix does is pre-measure your dry ingredients like your flour, baking soda or baking powder and cocoa.

Best Oreo Cupcake recipe
I use this shortcut all the time and I 100% own it or I wouldn't be calling this the best oreo cupcake recipe. I'd call it...I don't know, an okay cupcake recipe. Or, good enough cupcakes.
But no...these are the best oreo cupcakes and you don't have to tell anyone you used a farm girl hack. Shhhhh, it’ll be our secret! Wink, wink.
Don’t even get me started on what I think is the best Oreo buttercream frosting. I mean, this is basically a situation of buttercream meets buttercream Oreo filling...life is good!
Basically, these cupcakes are magical and you should probably grab a mixing bowl and a package of Oreo cookies right now.
Go ahead, I’ll wait!
In the meantime, let’s talk about what you’ll need to make these melt in your mouth cupcakes…
Ingredients for the Oreo Cupcakes recipe:
- Betty Crocker milk chocolate cake mix - this is the cake mix I used. I’m sure there are other chocolate cake mixes that will work but you’ll need to monitor your baking time as it may differ. Either way, you can go ahead and toss the box, because we’re gonna go rogue here on the recipe.
- Oreos - we’ll use some crushed and some broken in half for nesting into a pillow of buttercream frosting. Tip: Use the leftover cookies to make this easy oreo fluff.
- large eggs, at room temperature
- Liquids: water, milk and olive oil
- Pure vanilla extract
Ingredients for the Oreo Buttercream
- unsalted butter, at room temperature
- finely crushed Oreo cookies - we’ll be piping on the frosting so go ahead and crush these good. I like to put the oreo cookies into a ziplock bag and use a rolling pin to finely crush them. You could also use your food processor or blender, but then you have another dish to wash. I’ll let you decide.
- vanilla extract
- Confectioners sugar, also called powdered sugar

How to store these cupcakes
Recipe Tips
Because these cupcakes are topping with a buttercream frosting, I recommend you remove them from the refrigerator about 30 minutes before serving. This will give the cupcakes a chance to loosen up.
If you've ever bitten into a too-cold buttercream cupcake, you know what I'm talking about!
Every oven has its hot spots. I recommend you rotate the pan halfway through the baking time so these cook evenly.
Can I made the cupcakes ahead of time?
Yes, these Oreo cupcakes will keep up to a week in the fridge! You can also freeze the cupcakes in an airtight plastic bag for up to 2 months. Before sealing the bag, remove as much air as possible.
I would not recommend freezing the frosting.
How should I store these?
The cupcakes can be kept in an airtight container on the counter for 3 to 4 days and up to 1 week in the fridge.
