Ingredients

Potatoes

  • Russet potatoes

Basic Toppings

  • Butter
  • Sour cream or Greek yogurt
  • Shredded cheddar cheese
  • Bacon
  • Chives or green onions
  • Salt and black pepper

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 425°F.
  • Scrub potatoes clean and pierce each potato several times with a fork.
  • Lightly rub potatoes with oil and sprinkle with salt, if desired.
  • Place potatoes directly on the oven rack or on a baking sheet.
  • Bake for 45–60 minutes, until fork-tender.
  • Transfer cooked potatoes to a warm holding method until ready to serve.
  • Set out toppings and allow guests to build their own baked potatoes.

Notes

  • Plan for 1 potato per person, or 2 per person for very hungry guests.
  • Keep potatoes warm in a slow cooker on the warm setting, in a 200°F oven, or wrapped in foil in a towel-lined cooler.
  • For softer potato skins, wrap potatoes in foil before baking.
  • Hot toppings like chili or pulled pork stay warm best in a slow cooker.
