🛒 Ingredients & Why They’re Used
Here's what you'll need from the pantry and fridge.

- Flour: All-purpose flour gives the rolls a tender texture and structure.
- Yeast: Instant yeast makes things easy — no proofing required if you don’t want to.
- Sugar: Helps feed the yeast and adds a touch of sweetness.
- Butter: For flavor, moisture, and that perfect golden finish.
- Milk & Water: Warm liquids activate the yeast and keep the dough soft.
- Egg: Adds richness and helps the rolls stay fluffy.
- Salt: Balances out the flavors.

🥣 How to Make Easy Dinner Rolls

- Step 1: Activate the Yeast: Place yeast in a small bowl with 1 teaspoon sugar. Add ¼ cup lukewarm water.
Let mixture stand until bubbly. This tells you the yeast is activating and will do its magic.

- Step 2: Place ¼ cup sugar, salt and 2 Tablespoons butter In a large bowl.
Add 1 cup boiling water and stir to dissolve sugar and melt butter. Important: make sure the sugar dissolves, this is your one shot!
Allow to sit for at least 15 minutes.
Stir in the beaten egg to combine.

- Step 3: Add the yeast to the large bowl with the liquids.

- Step 4: Using a wooden spoon or a stand mixer, stir to incorporate 2 cups of the flour. Stir to combine.
Add ½ cup more and stir to combine. Continue adding flour, a tablespoon at a time, incorporating it, until the dough is smooth and no longer tacky. You might not need all the flour, or you could need a little bit more.
If you have a stand mixer, fit it with the dough hook attachment and knead it for 5-6 minutes. It will pull away from the sides of the bowl when it’s ready to rise.
If kneading dough by hand, you'll need to knead it for about seven minutes.

- Step 5: Cover the mixing bowl with a damp clean dish towel or plastic wrap. Let rise until doubled, about 1-1.5 hours, depending on how warm your kitchen in.

- Once doubled in size, shape into 9-12 rolls and place in your greased 9x9 baking dish.
Let rise again for 30 minutes or refrigerate overnight or ready to use.
Tip: If refrigerated, remove the rolls from the fridge an hour before baking to allow them to rise. Bake as instructed.

Farm Girl Tips
Check the Rise: A warm kitchen will make your dough rise faster. On chilly days, set it near the oven or on a heating pad.
Make Ahead or Freeze
Make Ahead: Make the dough the night before, cover tightly, and refrigerate. The next day, pull it out about an hour before baking so it can warm up and rise.
Alternatively, you can make the rolls and refrigerate before having them rise.
Freeze for Later: Once baked and cooled, freeze the rolls in a zip-top bag for up to 3 months. Reheat in the oven for 10 minutes at 325°F.

FAQ
Yes! You can make the dough ahead and refrigerate it overnight after shaping. Just cover the pan tightly with plastic wrap. When you’re ready to bake, pull the rolls out and let them rest at room temperature for about an hour so they can finish rising before going in the oven.
Definitely. Once baked and cooled completely, store your rolls in a freezer bag for up to 3 months. To serve, wrap them in foil and reheat in a 325°F oven for about 10 minutes, or until warm and soft again.
Dense rolls usually mean one of two things: the yeast wasn’t fully activated, or there was too much flour. Be sure your water is warm (not hot!) — about 105–115°F — and add flour gradually until the dough is just soft and slightly tacky. A proper first rise also helps them turn out light and airy.

Easy Dinner Yeast Rolls
Send me this recipe!
Ingredients
- ¼ cup + 1 teaspoon granulated sugar divided
- 2 Tablespoons + 1 tablespoon unsalted butter divided
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup milk or water, warmed to 105–115°F
- 2 ¼ teaspoons instant dry yeast (same as 1 packet)
- 1 large egg beaten
- 3 3–3 ½ cups all-purpose flour start with 3 cups, add more as needed
- Cooking spray or butter for greasing pan
Instructions
- Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the yeast, 1 teaspoon sugar, and ¼ cup lukewarm water (around 110°F). Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy and bubbly.
- Make the Base: In a large mixing bowl, combine ¼ cup sugar, salt, and 2 tablespoons melted butter. Add 1 cup of warm milk or water. Let the mixture cool to lukewarm (this is important so you don’t kill the yeast).
- Mix the Dough: Add the beaten egg and yeast mixture to the large bowl. Stir in 2 cups of flour until combined, then gradually add remaining flour, ½ cup at a time, until the dough forms a soft, smooth ball that’s no longer sticky.
- Knead the Dough: Knead by hand for 6–8 minutes, or in a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5–6 minutes on medium speed, until elastic and smooth.
- First Rise: Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp towel, and let rise until doubled in size, about 1 to 1½ hours.
- Shape the Rolls: Punch down the dough and divide into 9–12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a smooth ball by folding the edges underneath. Place in a greased 9x9-inch baking pan.
- Second Rise: Cover and let rise for 30–45 minutes, or until puffy. (For make-ahead rolls, cover tightly and refrigerate overnight. Let sit at room temp for 1 hour before baking.)
- Bake: Preheat oven to 350°F. Bake rolls for 15–20 minutes or until golden brown and the centers reach 190°F.
- Finish: Brush warm rolls with melted butter and serve.
